Katniss Everdeen stole the hearts of many in her captivating roles in The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. This young adult dystopian book trilogy has been made into some of the highest grossing movies in the past five years, and Katniss Everdeen, the shining star in each movie played by the beautiful Jennifer Lawrence, has taught the audience a lot about life and love. In honor of the final movie, Mockingjay: Part Two, coming out on November 20th, here are three things that I have learned from Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire!
Always put your family first.
This lesson is very evident throughout the three novels but especially noted when Katniss took her younger sister Prim’s spot in the Hunger Games. Prim, much younger and more fragile than Katniss, was the designated female to be in the Hunger Games when she was just 12 years old, but Katniss voluntarily took her place so that her sister could ultimately live. Katniss put her family and her love for them before herself.
Face your fears.
Obviously everyone has something to be afraid of, but Katniss showed that even if things scare you (like participating in the Hunger Games), you should fight them. Overcoming these fears will allow you to cross a line into greatness and feel freer, as though you could fly! When you face your fears, the sky is now the limit. The possibilities of what you can do in life are endless.
Do what you believe is right.
Katniss saw what the Capital was doing to its people, and she didn’t believe what they were doing was right. Out of fear, the people around her didn’t do anything to stop the Capital even though they agreed that what the Capital was doing was wrong. Katniss went against the law in order to do what she believed was right: saving lives of those around her. She taught us to do what is right even if it means going against what many people believe in. She taught us that injustice is not tolerable.
Thank you, Katniss, for not only kicking butt and taking names, but also for teaching young readers everywhere to believe in our abilities and ourselves and to never fear what is in front of us. Thank you for showing us love, compassion, bravery, and truth. We are very sad that your movie series coming to an end, but we are more than thankful for what you have taught us. Your time on the big screen may be coming to an end on November 20th, but your legacy and truth will live on forever.Â
