5 Romantic Movies that will Leave You Crying

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Xavier chapter.

We all love a good romantic comedy. Though there are times where we are dying for a little love but not so much in the mood to laugh. Here are five romantic movies that are certain to leave you crying, that you may not have seen or heard of before.

1. One Day (2011)

On July 15, 1988 — the day of their college graduation — two people from opposite sides of the tracks begin a lifelong friendship. Emma, an idealist from a working-class family, wants to make the world a better place. Dexter, a playboy, thinks the world is his oyster. For the next 20 years, the two friends reunite on the 15th of each July, sharing dreams, tears and laughter — until they discover what they’ve been searching for, each other.

So much can happen in one day. This movie is a simple reminder of that. It’s tragic and beautiful and such an amazing story. Anne Hathaway and Jim Stugress have some of the best chemistry.

2. The Best of Me (2014)

Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, Amanda and Dawson were once high-school sweethearts. They have a bittersweet reunion when they return to their hometown for the funeral of a mutual, beloved friend. Seeing each other again after 20 years apart reignites the love they’ve never forgotten, but Amanda and Dawson soon discover that the forces that drove them apart when they were younger pose even more threats today.

This is definitely a tearjerker. The flashbacks bring so much emotion, and you seriously connect to the main characters Amanda and Dawson. One finds themselves wishing to have a love like theirs by the end of this beautiful love affair. And doesn’t Michelle Monaghan and James Mardsen and Linia Liberto and Luke Bracey make like the cutest couples?

3. A Little Bit Of Heaven (2011)

New Orleans advertising executive Marley Corbett is a free-spirited woman who embraces her easy sexuality, shuns commitment, and gains support and strength from a close circle of friends. Then, Marley learns she has terminal colon cancer. Despite her determination not to be tied down in a serious relationship, Marley finds herself falling in love with her handsome doctor, even as her health slowly deteriorates.

Yeah, it’s one of those cancer stories. I suppose you can predict what’s going to happen… but we won’t spoil it for you. They have that weird sarcastic relationship we secretly wish to have. But all good things must come to an end, such a shame for this sad tale.

4.  Remember Me (2010)

Tyler has had a strained relationship with his father since a family tragedy. Rebellious and troubled, he thinks no one can understand his pain, then he meets Ally. Her warmth and spirit soon begin to heal him, and they fall in love. But just when Tyler begins to rediscover happiness and meaning in his life, emerging secrets threaten their romance.

The tears start stinging within the first five minutes. You’ll fall in love with Ally and Tyler. Then all of a sudden pieces come together that will break your heart and leave you crying. But on the bright side we get to see Robert Pattinson play a role where he isn’t a glittery vampire or a wizard. Plus, Emilie De Ravin is a brilliant leading lady.

5. Listen To Your Heart (2010)

Danny has an apartment as small as his paychecks, no family, and a struggling music career. Bu,t with unwavering optimism, for Danny, “every day is a great day to be alive.” It’s love at first sight when Danny meets Ariana, a wealthy hearing-impaired girl from Greenwich, Connecticut who tragically cannot hear the music she inspires him to write. Ariana is torn between hanging onto the shelter her controlling mother provides and fighting for a love that, if just given the chance, might just change her life. When tragedy strikes, determined that nothing can keep them apart, they must trust in the power of their love, and together discover just how important it is to “listen to your heart.”

Tragedy certainly does strike. While watching Danny and Ariana fall in love you almost forget that this film made our list. Kent Moran and Alexia Rasmussen can portray that cute relationship we all can only dream of with ease; letting us fall in love with their story. But by the end you heart will break with one character. Until you remember one word: love.

So go on curl up with your laptop and let yourself de-stress with a good cry. Don’t forget the tissues! And yes they all are available on Netflix.
