You always hear that technology makes the world smaller; it makes communication easier and allows friendships to last longer. While this is true, people often avoid the negative aspects of technology. The fact that social media makes everyone a little more envious of others. We argue that technology is advancing the human race, but in reality it is isolating us. In a world full of technology, we forget how to really talk to people. We forget what it is like to go somewhere and be present in the moment, to focus on those around us. In a sense, we become obsessed with the idea of proving to the world that we aren’t lonely, that we become lonely. Technology is a great thing and it solves many problems, but it also causes many issues when trying to compare oneself to others.
Social media has created this idea of the perfect lifestyle. When life in all its essence is never perfect. While every teen, tween, and even child is copying what they see others do on social networks, they attempt to prove that they are living life to the fullest. It is sad to say, but it is true, people live to post. Many are consumed by the idea that they can’t be anything less than perfect. They filter their pictures, tag all their friends, and usually only post pictures with big, happy smiles. Everyone does it, even I do. The truth is though nobody’s life is as perfect as they make it seem on Instagram, Snapchat, or, yes, even Facebook.
So I challenge you to not just live to post, but to actually live. Be quirky, nerdy, adventurous, and a little crazy. Be your true, priceless self. Because, honestly, the amount of likes you get on your next post don’t define you. You define yourself.
