What has been your greatest experience or internship?
I think my greatest experiences have all involved travelling. I spent five weeks in Tokyo this past summer, a place I’d never been before but have always been intrigued by. I ended up falling in love with the city and it’s kawaii culture (Japanese for “cute”!) and I’m dying to find an excuse to get back there someday. Internship-wise, I am interning at the photography department of Nylon Magazine this semester on Thursdays and Fridays, which has been a blast so far. The atmosphere is really fun and relaxed, and they trust their interns with real responsibility—I’ve already had a photo published in the latest issue of Nylon Guys!
Tell us about your fashion blog, how did it start?
I started my blog two years ago while I was doing a Yale Summer Abroad course in Paris and taking too many pictures to know what to do with. I wanted a more creative way to share my photos and experiences beyond the straightforward Facebook album, so I started Photojenic and have been updating it regularly ever since. It’s a mix of fashion and photography posts, since those two interests are very intertwined to me. I’ve always loved the sense of narrative and fantasy in fashion photography, brand campaigns and magazine editorials, so it’s been really fun for me to interpret that style in my own way.
What inspired you to do photography?
I’ve been taking pictures ever since I had a tiny point and shoot camera as a kid. Photography has always been a way for me to collect memories and filter them through my own interests and curiosities. I am constantly being inspired by other photographers like Sally Mann, Rinko Kawauchi, and Gregory Crewdson, all who bring out a sense of haunted wonder in their work.
What have you done with your photography?Â
This summer I put together an official photography website (www.jennifermulrow.com) where I show a range of my best work, from photographs to videos. I also have my blog (www.photojenicblog.blogspot.com) where I post more frequently my latest photos, personal style, and creative inspirations. Last year I ran a photography segment for the YDN Weekend where I posted groups of my original photos centered around a chosen theme (“Teenage Kicks,” “Creatures of the Night,” “Home,” etc.). My freshman year I was the first Yale Style Guru on CollegeFashionista.com, and in high school I took a Parsons film photography course in Paris. More recently at Nylon, I’ve been getting hands-on experience with studio photography, which is something I’ve always been secretly intimidated by.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
My long shot dream for after school would be to work full-time on my blog. There are fashion bloggers today who have talent agents and are sponsored by brands to promote their clothing, travel the world, and take pictures. Like I said, that’s the long shot dream, but it definitely keeps me motivated! More realistically, I’d like to end up in NYC and work at a creative place like Nylon or as an assistant to a photographer, living somewhere downtown with my best friends.
What will you miss most about Yale?
I think I’ll most miss Yale’s feeling of endless opportunity. That sounds cheesy, but there are so many people here who start their own clubs, write original plays, organize trips, and just actively pursue their passions. I think Yale’s supportive environment really allows people to pursue what they love in big ways.Â
