Cheap Tricks to Spruce Up Your Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

Yes, you read that right! You don’t need to spend a ton of money to make your bedroom look stylish. In fact, you can create a chic look to your room without spending any money at all. Who wouldn’t want to make their home look more beautiful for free? So, take a look at these ideas and pick the ones you like best.

Wooden Headboard

You can find salvaged wood in old buildings or even get it for free from your neighbors. I find that sometimes stores like Home Depot and Canadian Tire even have them lying around in their gardening section! Try to find any shape and size of wood and you can use it to make a headboard for your bedroom. If you want to go the extra mile, buy some wood stain to help get that old wooden feel. The worn, weathered look of the wood will make the room feel warm and cozy. All you have to do is stand the wood up, making it easy to change styles when you get bored with the look!

Wall Display Pictures

The fact that you can display photos and pictures on walls to make them look beautiful isn’t news to many, but did you know you can do it for free? The trick is not to use frames; just arrange the pictures in an interesting pattern. You can have them arranged in a heart shape, have them spelling out a word, or even just hang them up randomly! The best part of this technique is that you can hang the pictures however you want and they can be of whatever you want! Any time a picture gets old, you can switch it out for a new one. This idea works great for that one empty wall we all have in our room.

Washi Tape Wall Decor

Use masking tape to decorate your bedroom walls!  You can use several different colors to create all sorts of interesting shapes and designs. Just use what you can find in the house, or you can even get very cheap tape from the dollar store. You thought this was a great hack? Well it gets better! Using masking tape doesn’t ruin your walls or chip the paint, so you can literally change up the designs on your walls as often as you want!

String Lights

While this last tip isn’t free, it will only cost you a few dollars, and you don’t have to wait till Christmas to hang up your lights! Keep them up all year round in your bedroom or around your house! Indoor fairy/string lights are a great way to spruce up your room and give it that cozy feel. I personally love the small fairy lights from Chapters/Indigo because they last forever. They come in a variety of lengths so you can choose according to how much space is available to you.
