Gifts to Impress Your Valentine This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, throwing us all into a desperate frenzy to find gifts for our partners. With the holiday sneaking up on us, it’s easy to fall back on the easy, traditional flowers-and-chocolate combo and call it a day. But if you’re looking to shake things up this year, here are some unique Valentine’s Day gift ideas that scream romance and send the message over loud and clear that they are loved and appreciated!

Open When Letters

This is the gift that keeps on giving! Open When Letters are a great, unique alternative to a run-of-the-mill Valentine’s Day card or letter. Let your thoughts and feelings towards them do all the work for you by writing your partner letters to open on certain occasions. “Open When You’ve Had a Bad Day,” “Open When You Need a Pep Talk”… The options are endless! This gift gives you so much freedom to choose topics you want to write to them for, and gives your partner a source of love and support, even if you’re not there with them physically.

This kind of gift can be a complete DIY project for yourself, or you can buy “Open When” kits from stores like Chapters to help you through the creation process!

If you’re not too confident in your ability to write full letters for your partner, no need to worry! This alternative option is just as cute and romantic. While keeping the notes short, “Why I Love You” jars or bottles let you express your love for your S.O. and let them know all the things that you love about them.

Personalized Jewelry

Jewelry is often a go-to gift for Valentine’s Day—but there are many ways to make it more special and romantic. One option for this is to gift your partner a necklace with your initials on it, so they can have a piece of you with them no matter where they are. However, if this idea doesn’t appeal to you, there are countless other ways to personalize jewelry and put your own spin on it! For example, a popular trend right now is necklaces that have coordinates of somewhere special on them, such as where you met, where you got married, etc.

Another timeless idea is to gift them a locket with a picture of you together — this gift will always win you some brownie points!

Custom Picture Painting

These paintings make for the perfect keepsake. Choose a picture of you two that’s extra special and get it professionally painted by an artist. Etsy is a perfect website to explore for this kind of gift, since there are countless artists offering their services with various art styles as well! It’s a great alternative to a simple framed picture of you two. Another similar option is to purchase a custom paint-by-numbers kit of a picture of you two.

This is a great way to put their artistic talents to work, especially during pandemic lockdowns and restrictions that may leave them searching for activities to keep them busy. Although it may take some time, it ultimately ends in a sentimental keepsake that they helped create.

Date Night Bucket List

Just like the Open When Letters, this is a gift that keeps on giving. Show your partner that you’re excited to try new things and create new memories with them. This gift idea can come in a variety of different forms, including a 100 Date Idea List Scratch Poster or Flowjo’s bucket list date cards. Instead of having one special night out together on Valentine’s Day, this gift idea ensures that there are endless date ideas to make your time together special and fun!

Use The Five Senses

When picking out Valentine’s Day gifts for your significant other, using the five senses is a great way to show your partner that you pay attention to the small things. By buying your partner something pertaining to each category (touch, sound, smell, taste, sight), you can really show off how much you know your partner and their needs/wants. This idea comes with endless options and gives you a lot of room for creativity while also being unique!

For example, perhaps for the sense of smell, you remember your partner’s love for candles or certain perfumes/colognes. Using the five senses is a great way to spoil your significant other in many ways!

There are a million ways to say “I love you” and express your love for your partner. Although all Valentine’s Day gifts may translate to the same meaning, gifting your partner something unique adds extra sentiment to the gesture. Hopefully this article gave you some inspiration for ways to show your love this Valentine’s Day!
