Her Campus York University is growing fast! Our online publication has so many amazing aspects, including one of our newest writers Alicia Oliveri. This week I got to interview Alicia and learn so much about her, including how excited she is to start the Her Campus journey!
Name: Alicia Oliveri
Program/Year: Communication studies, fifth year
Age: 22
Hometown: Thornhill, Ontario
What made you want to join Her Campus & what are you most excited for?
I was interested in joining Her Campus because I wanted to develop my writing skills and build my writing portfolio for future job applications. I’m really excited to continue to write about topics I’m passionate about alongside a group of smart and inspiring women. Â
Other than Her Campus what other extracurricular activities do you do?
At the moment, in addition to school, I am working as a social media intern for Five Diamonds Canada, working part time as an events assistant for AMPD Performance Facilities, rehearsing for a play at York called The Vagina Monologues, and interning at a Toronto Dance Theatre as a communications assistant.
What’s the toughest thing about balancing your work and school?
I think it’s definitely been tough keeping track of both. I feel like it’s been difficult to step out of “work mode” in order to keep on top of my studies, as I’m at work more than I’m at school. I also feel like I’m always on the go and never really get time to relax.
Favorite concert you have ever been to?
I feel like I’ve been to a million concerts but my favorites have to be either Justin Timberlake or Troye Sivan. Also, my sister and I have been big Ed Sheeran fans for a while so those are always fun concerts as well.
If you could give your first year self advice, what would it be?
I would probably tell my first year self to chill out a bit, be herself and to stop worrying so much about what everyone else thinks of her. University has definitely helped me grow up a lot and learn how to be comfortable with who I am.
What’s the one place you’re dying to travel to?
My dream travel destination since I was young has always been Los Angeles, but right now I really want to go somewhere tropical ’cause it’s freezing.
Favorite conspiracy theory?
Oh my God SO MANY! Okay it’s hard to choose just one but I would probably say a tie between the Mandela Effect and Avril Lavigne conspiracies. Look them up, they’re both super interesting.
How would your friends describe your personality?
So, I asked some of my friends and some qualities they used to describe me included genuine, thoughtful, kind, funny and fun. Friendship is one of the most important things to me in this world and I really value my friends.
Do you have a favorite movie or TV show?
Yes! My favorite movies are the High School Musical series, School of Rock and Friends with Benefits. I have so many favorite TV shows but some of my faves are Friends, New Girl, The Mindy Project, Gilmore Girls and Dancing with the Stars. Check them all out!
Is there anything that scares you?
One of the things that scares me the most is the passing of any of my family or friends. I’m also extremely claustrophobic and have a weird fear of being, like, falsely accused and sent to jail.
What are you most looking forward to after graduating from York University?
I’m really looking forward to working, actually! I’m hoping to find a job I really like within my field and continue to learn and build new skills. I also hope to be able to travel a bit before I start working.
