Name: Laura Eli Monroy

Age: 25

Major & Year of Study: Psychology, 1st year

City/Hometown: Toronto

Position at Her Campus: Writer

What’s one song you that you think best represents who you are?

“Alibis” by Marianas Trench. I wasn’t always pleased with who I was, and I’m still not, and the song really speaks to me when it talks about that.

Have you traveled? If so what has been the best place in your experience?

I have! I don’t travel very often, and I haven’t been to many places, but I think San Francisco was my favourite place to go to. The lifestyle there is just stupendous, and the family I have there helped. The fact it’s by the sea made it even better.

What made you want to join Her Campus York U?

I actually have a friend who had joined Her Campus, and she seemed to enjoy everyone so much, it just looked like the type of thing I’d want to be a part of. Just to have that sense of community and warmth from people seemed wonderful.

How would your friends describe you?

Creative, tired, and a bit neurotic. My mental health isn’t the best, but my friends know I’m trying.

What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekends?

I think the best thing to do on the weekend is to go to a friend’s house, or spend the whole weekend cooped up in my room.

Who is someone that you look up to & why?

I know this sounds a little weird, but I don’t look up to real people very much. I’ve just come to realize everyone has a different path and it’s okay to be different. If I had to pick someone though, I would pick my sister, she started with a small job and she went places with her schooling. Admittedly, I am jealous of how happy she can be, so I look up to that quite a lot as well.

If we were talking about fiction people, I’d have to say Sailor Moon. She’s a princess, fights evil with love, and has a castle protected by her friends. Who wouldn’t look up to that?

Do you have any hobbies outside of school and writing for HCYU?

My favourite thing to do is paint. I actually run a small Etsy shop under the name Lastronautt where I used to sell my art. I sell a few things like vintage jewelry on there as well. I was inspired to run a shop because I had been running low on funds one day, and I really needed money to get to school. So I decided to paint some art and sell some pretty finds I’ve found. Not a lot of people have bought from the shop, but it was enough to give me a few funds in between. I also read manga quite a lot and have a collection of over 70 mangas. My favourites are Haikyuu!!, Boku No Hero Academia, and Cardcaptors Sakura.

If you had to pick only one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pizza! There are so many different ways to eat pizza, so there isn’t a huge limitation there.

What’s your favorite movie?

Rise of the Guardians and The Day After Tomorrow. They contrast a lot with each other, I mean one’s about Santa and Jack Frost, while the other is about global warming. It’s pretty funny.

Do you have any advice or tips on how to combat stress during exam season?

I know this sounds cheesy, but take a breath. It’s okay if you fail at something, it wasn’t meant to be this time. You’ve gotta just accept it and move on, and you can build around what happened. Just remember you don’t have to fail at something, but if you do, it’s okay.

What is something you are excited about or looking forward to doing with Her Campus as a writer?

I’m just excited to know people are reading my articles and enjoying them. It’s a real pleasure to know that. I think it’s just great to be able to spend time inspiring people or helping them out. I’ve planned a couple of different articles I’m super excited to write about, and hopefully, they’ll help people. I’m also excited to go to more of the events, they’re so much fun and they bring me a sense of community. Everyone’s so nice during them, so I really do think it’ll be great to go to more.

Laura’s smile and her artistic explorations are so amazing, and we couldn’t be luckier to have her. Thanks to her for being so inspiring, and an awesome new member to the writing team! We look forward to seeing more articles by her on the site, and we definitely recommend checking out her etsy art and articles!
