If like me you are starting to feel the effect of splashing out on those freshers’ fishbowls, then it’s time to start saving. Of course there are multiple societies to join, there is always the gym to visit and York is bristling with sights to see. However, there will be some nights when you just crave to sit in your room, wear your onesie and have a mug of hot chocolate. For those nights the best thing is to gather the girls for a chick flick night! So here are four of the best chick flicks for those lazy nights in.
Mean Girls
With an excellent cast and hilarious script, ‘Mean Girls’ is undoubtedly the chick flick of our university era. We all know that Lindsay Lohan plays the new girl in school and Rachel McAdams plays the leader of the ‘Plastics’ but for those that haven’t seen ‘Mean Girls’, this film revolves around sabotage, getting guys and maintaining popularity. Now ladies, who say these aren’t the ingredients for a perfect chick flick? Mean Girls is one of those films many girls know off by heart, but it will never ever get old. Oh and just one last thing…. I would advise that you should never try to make ‘’fetch’’ happen. It just isn’t going to happen
Bridget Jones’s Diary
There are two things in life that a girl does not want to become 1) her mother 2) Bridget Jones. From her embarrassing fancy dress outfits to her novelty Christmas jumpers, Bridget Jones’ diary depicts the life of a thirty something singleton for who we can all relate to. This film is one, which gives hope to all the single girls out there! Just remember to try not to sit home alone with a bottle of wine and sing ‘All By Myself’ whilst practicing the air drums.

Bridesmaids
It was the surprise hit of 2011; Bridesmaids is a chick flick, which is crude, laugh out loud funny, and cringe worthy. This film involves five different girls acting as bridesmaids for Maya Rudolph. Each one of them brings something unique to the cast, but it is Melissa McCarthy’s hilarious performance as Megan that will get all you ladies clutching your stomachs…need I say bridesmaid dress shopping?
This is one film that should never be watched alone under any circumstances. It truly comes with a warning sign which includes tissues, chocolate and copious ice-cream. Based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) have brilliant chemistry and a typical ‘will they or won’t they’ relationship. The consequences of their conflicting social classes is likely to make your heart bleed, no matter how many times you watch it.
Love Actually
Yes, technically Love Actually is a Christmas film but it can be enjoyed at any time throughout the year. The spirit of Christmas is shown alongside the warm fuzzy feeling of love… arguably one of life’s perfect combinations? There are heartbreaks and heartaches, but a fair dose of love to mend all of those. At the end of the day, you just need to remember that love really is all around us.
