Technically, the best time to apply for a job is ALL THE TIME! However, here’s a few of the peak times to apply for a job, and/or how to make an employer notice you if it’s not during the peak. Two industries are the focus, and the third one is for my “I need an internship so I can graduate” girlies (we are in the same boat)!
retail
First off, any job in retail has peak hiring time during the holidays, and a few also include the summer. This is because of seasonal and temporary positions – but do not fret, you can become a permanent employee after your contractual period. Showcasing good work ethic and skills will give you the upper hand when talking to the manager about a more permanent role within the company.
When I say retail, yes clothing retail is included, but your department stores is where the real action is at. Such as Wal-Mart and Kohl’s, etc.
food
Server/waiter jobs, and really anything in the food industry, has peak hiring times during the holiday season. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not go home and cook after shopping all day, I’d rather go to a nice restaurant with the family! Other peak times is summer because these places know those who are under 18 are now out of school and their schedules have become more available. This is your time to pounce!
Any restaurant considered fine-dining, and even the more laidback spots. Also included s any place where the main activity is not eating, but it’s definitely listed as a perk on the company website such as a country club – especially in the summer!
internship
While internships are biggest during the summer, you can do them whenever. If you are looking at a specific place, but they are not actively looking for an intern, that doesn’t mean you can’t shoot them a quick email or visit them in person. Let them know that you are interested – this show initiative and loyalty, employers love that stuff! Apply for an internship at least a month in advance if possible so you can plan accordingly, especially if it’s for a college credit.
