A question I get asked a lot is how I chose forensic science as a major. And I think it’s a really interesting question. I started my college career at Robert Morris University in Moon Township, PA for biomedical engineering, a far different path from forensics. I was only there for one semester before I realized it was way too expensive for me to go there, along with realizing I was bad at math and engineering required too much creativity for me. So I transferred to YSU because it was much less expensive and I was able to commute. I still had no clue what I wanted to do though. So I spent a semester doing general classes while thinking about what I found interesting. Then I came across forensic science.
I had grown up watching crime shows like Forensic Files and Criminal Minds (my personal favorite). I had never really considered it as a career choice. It seemed like something so interesting, but at the same time somewhat fictional because of the way it was depicted. I knew I wanted to do something meaningful with my career and make a difference to people. So, after looking further into the curriculum and career potentials in forensics I talked to an advisor and got officially established as a forensic science major. It has been a fun and challenging journey to be sure.
Picking a major can be very difficult but once you pick one you’re happy with it is very rewarding in the end. I am super excited to graduate this semester and get out into the field of forensics!
