Travel Guide to Williamsburg, Virginia

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Youngstown chapter.

Williamsburg is a gorgeous historic city located in Virginia.  This early British settlement in America later developed into the capital of the Colony of Virginia from 1699-1780.  As a city of common-wealth for the common-man, this destination appeals to four-million visitors each year.  A trip here can satisfy all types of travelers: golf lovers, history buffs, thrill seekers, avid campers, endless learners, beach goers, fun lovers, and music makers.  One of their big mantras exclaims “it’s revolutionary fun with something for everyone!”

From luxurious spas to award-winning restaurants to living-history museums, this place is stacked with joy.  Biking, hiking, and camping allow you to soak in the sights of creation.  Home to the College of William and Mary, this comfy college town cradles the second-oldest institution of higher education in America.  Williamsburg comprises the tip of the Historic Triangle with Jamestown and Yorktown.  Other notable nearby cities include Virginia Beach and Powhatan.

When to go

Any time is a great time to travel to Williamsburg. It’s gorgeous year-round, but especially captivating between the months of September to December. If you’re looking for warmer temperatures to enjoy Water Country USA, you should make arrangements for the end of August when the temperatures are still warm yet the crowds are significantly reduced. Artists and creatives like myself would enjoy visiting in the late fall when the weather is more comfortable, the leaves are breathtaking, and the holiday decorations are out. Their city has an excellent website with endless lists of attractions to enjoy during each season. Whenever you go, Williamsburg is sure to not disappoint.

Your packing list will look different in regards to which season you choose to travel.  Get into the habit of checking the radar as your departure date gets closer!  No matter your length or season of stay in this rich historic city, here are a couple musts for your bag:

Where to visit

Williamsburg is filled to the brim with fun things to do.  Three of their biggest attractions include Water Country USA, Busch Gardens, and Colonial Williamsburg.  Here’s a break-down of each place:

  • Water Country USA: This is the perfect spot to hang loose and catch some good vibes.  Water Country is Virginia’s largest water park, containing thirteen major attractions that range from giant slides to water coasters.  You can even practice white-water rafting and surfing with some of their attractions!  Go check out their website, which ranks each experience by thrill level.  Don’t forget your sunscreen, towel, and some shades.
  • Busch Gardens:  Regardless of your age, fun is always in season at this amusement park.  Remaining open all year long, Busch Gardens caters to all with thrilling coasters, family-friendly entertainment, delicious food, and unique seasonal themes.  During the fall, they host Howl-O-Scream, which is filled to the brim with terrifying attractions, funny Halloween shows, and Oktoberfest music.  My family’s favorite is Christmas Town between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  They adjust their hours of operation for visitors to view their million-light display across the park.  This annual tradition largely contributes to why they’ve been voted the Most Beautiful Theme Park for 29 years in a row.  They also have a location in Tampa, Florida!
  • Colonial Williamsburg: Colonial Williamsburg is a living-history experience.  Their 300 acres of historic land contain hundreds of restored structures and re-created buildings from 18th century America.  All employees wear time-period costumes and typically speak in accents with colonial grammar and diction, further immersing you into the experience.  They also host several themed shows and presentations during the day at different sites such as the Governor’s Palace (pictured below) and Capitol building.  Pick up one of their maps and schedules at the Visitor’s Center before exploring!

Where to wine and dine

Williamsburg, Virginia is stacked with fine dining.  Here are some of my favorites with a brief summary:

  • Le Yaca: impeccable French cuisine *they curate especially delicious Thanksgiving meals!
  • Christiana’s Tavern: Colonial-inspired dishes with 18th and 19th century recipes
  • Berret’s Seafood: fresh, regional seafood
  • Duke of Gloucester: a solid stop for a quick bite in between shopping at Merchants Square and exploring Colonial Williamsburg *make sure to try their Dominion root beer!

In my humble opinion, the entertainment hub of uptown Williamsburg is the Shops at Merchants Square.  Here are some of my favorite places for retail therapy:

  • Scotland House, Ltd.: for authentic fashion and accessories from Scotland, Ireland, and England
  • The Christmas Shop: for adorable gifts and customizable ornaments
  • William and Mary Campus Bookstore: for all of your gold and green W&M merch
  • Visitor Center: for Colonial Williamsburg-specific mementos such as quill pens, sweet potato recipes, and pewter jewelry
