20 Fabulous Ways to Layer for Fall

The leaves are turning orange and red, and it’s getting too chilly to wear your favorite summer dress with sandals. Embrace fall, and start layering! Her Campus is here to show you 20 ways to layer:

Blazer it Up
Wearing a blazer over any outfit is a foolproof plan. Blazers are ideal if it’s too warm for a jacket but too chilly to wear a dress by itself. Look From Alexander Wang.

Socks with Heels
High socks with heels are not only perfect for fall, but also socks make it easier to walk in those killer high heels. Get creative with your choice of socks and go with colors like orange and magenta, or go neutral with a crème or black. Look from Urban Outfitters.

The Oversized Sweater Technique
When you’re in a rush to get to class and you already have your favorite dress on, throw on an oversized sweater over it. That way if it’s chilly you’ll be comfortable, and if it’s warm you can take it off and throw it in your purse. Look from Club Monaco.

Tights Under Shorts
At the end of the summer season I was devastated that I was unable to wear my adorable cut-off jean shorts, but I’ve discovered I don’t have to put them away! I have the perfect solution: just wear them with tights. The tights can be a fun color like blue or natural like black. Look from Alexa Chung.

The Scarf
Wearing a scarf is always a good idea on those chilly fall days. The infinity scarves are perfect for fall because you can wear them in so many different ways. You can even wear some infinity scarves as a dress. Look from American Apparel.

Long-sleeved Shirt Under a Dress
This is a simple layering technique. As the days get colder you definitely have to start bundling up. Just wear a long-sleeved shirt underneath a dress! It’s easy and cute for the winter days. Look from BCBG.

Take Advantage of the Jean Jacket
I recently found a vintage Levi jean jacket that I’m obsessed with. I love to layer it with my adorable floral dresses and skirts. You can find a jean jacket at your local Salvation Army or Goodwill. Look from Rachel Bilson.

Dress Up The Long-sleeved Shirt
The long-sleeved shirt by itself is pretty regular and boring. Dress it up with a cute vest, whether it’s jean, fur, or satin. It’s super cute and fun! Look from Diane Von Furstenberg.

Anything For a Cardigan
The cardigan is the perfect solution to your layering problems. The best part about the cardigan is you can take it off if your classroom is too warm or you want to show off your party dress. Look from DKNY.

The Tube Top Dress
I am obsessed with this layering technique because it’s perfect for transitioning from day to night. Personally, I wear my tube top dress with a long-sleeved shirt: either a collared or chiffon one will do. Look from American Apparel.

A Tee Under a Formal Dress
Need to tone down a bright and bold formal dress? All you have to do is put on a white tee shirt underneath to dress it down.

Shrug it
Wearing a shrug is an effortless look! Just wear it with a plain tee shirt and jeans for class or wear it with a dress to go out in. Look from ASOS.

Over-the-Knee Socks With Boots
This is a cute fall look that will work for an everyday outfit. Wear your over-the-knee socks with boots so the sock sticks out a little bit. Look from Vanessa Bruno.

Double the Shirt
A classic layering method is just layering two different colored shirts, whether they’re long- or short-sleeved. It’s relaxed and easy to do! Look from Delia’s.

The Preppy Look
If you’re into the preppy look, this outfit will be perfect for you. All you have to do is wear a collared shirt underneath any sweater. It’s a perfect all-around everyday look. Look from Kate Middleton.

Layered Necklaces
Not all layered looks have to do with clothing. You can also layer your jewelry! Layering necklaces is easy and fun; just make sure that you don’t mix silver and gold. Look from Urban Outfitters.

Longer vs. Shorter
It’s going to start getting too chilly to wear crop tops in the winter. Don’t put them away just yet! Wear a longer camisole or even a collared shirt underneath so you can wear it all year round! Look from Rag and Bone.

Take Advantage of the Turtleneck
When it gets bitterly cold in the winter try a turtleneck underneath a sweater or a button-down shirt. Look from BCBG Max Azria.

The Petticoat
An interesting way to layer skirts is to put a petticoat underneath for a puffier look. Look from American Apparel.

Last But Not Least
Leggings are the most important piece of clothing when layering for the fall and winter season. You can wear leggings with anything (except for a crop top of course, that’s not chic) whether it’s a tee shirt dress, an oversized collared shirt; there are so many possibilities with a pair of leggings. Look from Whitney Port.
