Want to have the Urban Outfitters aesthetic in your room without having to shop at Urban Outfitters? I feel you. There are plenty of small businesses out there that will take your college apartment to the same level, without dropping all of that money on that basic Boho tapestry every girl has above her bed.
Here are five places to start looking to help you embody the UO look without the UO price.
1. Any local bookstore
Unfortunately, in this day and age, bookstores are dying out due to the surge in popularity of eBooks and movies. However, print books do make for a pretty aesthetic, especially when stacked on top of each other or leaned against the side of a window in a cozy nook. By supporting a local bookstore in your area, not only will you get a pretty piece of room decor, but hopefully a good read, too!
2. Porch Light
Plants instantly brighten up any room, and Porch Light is the place to get yours! Based in Portland, Oregon, Porch Light sells a variety of different houseplants, from ferns to arrowhead plants, and much more! They also have a variety of candles, cups, and other home decor that you can accessorize your room with.
3. The Knotting Knight
Now that you’ve secured your plants, you need a fun way to show them off! The Knotting Knight makes custom macrame, which is essentially wall decor made from woven ropes. She makes the cutest plant hangers to hold anything from your tiny succulents to larger pathos plants. They’re the perfect addition to add a bit of Boho flare to your room, while also accentuating the look of your plants!
4. MadiMStore
A queen with a spool and yarn, MadiMStore knits everything from arm throws to hats to pet beds. In particular, I’ve had my eyes on this Chunky Knit Blanket, which not only looks perfect as a decoration on top of your bed or couch, but also oh-so-perfect to just cuddle up with on a cold night while doing some homework or watching Netflix.
5. Nordic Collection
Another Etsy business, Nordic Collection has the cutest map prints that you can have customized to your hometown, your school’s city, or any other special place you have memories in. Having this piece hung up in your room feels extra meaningful when you want to be reminded of home, but it also makes for a great backdrop because of its minimalist design.
Especially with the Holiday Season right upon us, it can be difficult not to splurge at the same stores for gifts and home accessories (sorry Urban, I still love you). So if you’re ever feeling stumped about where to get that new extra something for your dorm or apartment, check out one – or all! – of these small businesses!
