Even though we all love scoring a fabulous drugstore product, there’s nothing quite like the bliss that comes with indulging in more expensive cosmetics. We feel so fancy whenever we leave the mall with a classic black and white striped Sephora bag or spent a little extra on the fancier beauty products at Target, knowing our look is about to be on fleek.
When it comes to purchasing more expensive beauty products, you’ll want to make sure you’re making a smart investment, since it’s not the same as buying a less expensive lip gloss at the drugstore. That’s why we talked to other collegiettes about their favorite high-end products, and why they are worth the extra cost. Get ready to #treatyoself!
Jennifer Silva, a sophomore at Salem State University: Urban Decay Vice3 Eyeshadow Palette ($60)
“It’s worth the price because the shadows are of good quality. It’s perfect because I can play around with it, whether I want to do something natural or fun. There’s a variety of colors, so it’s versatile and easy to switch it up a lot.”
Kelly Brickey, a senior at Belmont University: Mary Kay Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 ($18)
“I’m obsessed because the coverage alone evens out my skin tone without being too heavy of a base for my makeup. It also has SPF 20, which I swear by, because I don’t leave the house without a bit of sun coverage for my face!”
Emily Platt, a junior at Vassar College: Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Nail Polishes ($9.99 for the top coat and $9.99 for each color)
“The biggest splurge I’ve ever made [on beauty] is spending $20 on Sally Hansen’s new gel manicure polishes. I’ve never owned a polish that actually lasts a week or more, completely chip-free. I’ve already purchased three different shades in three weeks, meaning I’m certifiably addicted! It’s definitely worth skipping on the cheap polish for these.”
Iris Goldsztajn, a senior at UCLA: Chanel Lipsticks ($35)
“I own a couple Chanel lipsticks, one red and one wine, and I love them so much. To me, they’re almost worth it for the packaging and the double ‘C’ alone. Other than that, they truly are great shades and quality.”
Kelly Basdavanos, a senior at Belmont University: Estée Lauder Pure Color Blush in Pink Kiss ($32)
“I love it because it adds the perfect amount of rosy highlights to my face, and lasts all day!”
Felicia Beaton, a sophomore at Bunker Hill Community College: Urban Decay Naked Palette ($54)
“I use this palette quite often, enough that I brought it with me to my summer job as a camp counselor so I could do my makeup on the weekends with it. I think it is worth the price because the shadows are so useful. I love the nude look and the tone of the original Naked palette, since you can’t go wrong with neutral shadows!”
Elizabeth Huebsch, a senior at Davidson College: Clarisonic Mia Brush ($99)
“I think skincare products are worth the splurge, because they’re the foundation for your beauty regimen. An esthetician recommended the Clarisonic for me because I need something to clean my skin deeply, without being too abrasive. I thought it was worth the money because it will last me a long time (two years already!) and I can use it with different products and brush types if my skin changes.”
