Beauty Review: Bed Head Foxy Curls™ Styling Iron

The first time I learned that my hair curls terribly, I was in the third grade. It was December, and my mom had curled my hair for a performance of the Nutcracker. In the half hour it took us to reach the theatre, my hair was straight.

Let’s put it this way — my ballet teacher, who had insisted we all wear ringlets, wasn’t too happy about it.

Since then, I’ve made few attempts to curl my hair. One time in junior high, I “splurged” (think $10 drugstore purchase) on a curling iron, only to burn myself so badly I still have the scar. Needless to say, I went to prom with straight hair. I went to graduation with straight hair. My first day of college, I was sporting — yes — straight hair.

Earlier this year, another failed attempt left me with what closely resembled a bird’s nest atop my head. The only good coming out of that incident was realizing that yes, I could be Ke$ha for Halloween.

When Bed Head offered me the opportunity to review its new Foxy Curls styling iron, I jumped at the chance. Featuring a tourmaline and ceramic barrel, the iron is tapered to offer a curl that can either be tighter at the top or tighter at the bottom. A mini-clamp that does not cover the length of the barrel eliminates those pesky kinks, leaving you with a smooth spiral. Heat settings give you the flexibility of having both a low- or high-temperature styling tool, and if you’re as forgetful as I am, this last perk is useful: it shuts off automatically within an hour.

I used the Bed Head curling iron a few times before sitting down to do this review. My first impression of the tool was that it is incredibly easy to use — it’s a miracle what a mini-clamp can do! My hair falls down to my lower back and is much thicker than it looks so I usually need to set aside at least 30-45 minutes just to straighten it. I won’t even bother going into how long it takes to curl it with a regular curling iron. With Bed Head’s iron, however, a mere fifteen minutes was all it took to achieve the “Foxy Curls” look.

In this look, I opted for a smaller curl towards the top of my head — the understated curls are perfect for a daytime look. For more body, use the smaller side of the barrel on the ends and the wider side of the barrel at the roots. I found that it was more difficult to wrap my hair the other way around on the barrel, and that if I wrapped my hair around the curling iron all the way up with the tapered end at the roots, I could achieve similar results to using the wide end at the roots.

My only gripe with the curling iron was the placement of the buttons and the heat control swatch. I accidentally pressed the “off” button a number of times and especially while rolling my hair up the iron, I kept switching between high, medium and low heat on accident.

Overall, however, I was more than satisfied with Bed Head’s Foxy Curls styling iron. With hair that holds a curl for no more than an hour (usually much less against the elements, and by that I mean anything other than perfect condition), I was suprised to find that by the time I got home from dinner, which was a several-hour long affair, my curls were still intact. They had lost a bit of their luster, but were definitely still in good shape for a night out in the city.
