Circle lenses: The latest fad in eyewear

Now this is a different kind of eyewear. They’re called circle lenses and according to a New York Times article from this weekend, they’re supposed to give you the “childlike, doe-eyed appearance” so many women desire.

We all know that contact lenses can alter the color of your eyes—just look at the red-eyed Volturi from the “Twilight” films—but these lenses take it one step further. Circle lenses are special, colored contact lenses imported from Asia and make eyes appear bigger by covering not only the iris (like typical contacts do), but also parts of the white area of your eye.

After gaining a huge following all across Asia, circle lenses are making their mark on high schools and colleges across the United States. The lenses cost between $20 and $30 a pair and are available for the girl seeking prescription strength contacts or the gal simply looking to make a fashion statement.

But like many beauty trends, circle lenses are causing many doctors to worry. According to the article, many doctors are concerned that so many girls are wearing them without consulting their doctors. This is because although contacts are a great, convenient alternative to glasses, they can cause serious medical problems when they’re not fitted properly or aren’t purchased with the correct prescription.

I’m still psyching myself up for getting regular contact lenses to replace my glasses, so I definitely wouldn’t risk my eyes by wearing these fashionable, yet potentially dangerous lenses. But what do you think? Would you wear these circle lenses? Do you wear them already? Post a comment.
