It’s 2018, and thankfully the beauty industry is beginning to understand that everyone’s skin color, type, and texture is different. We’ve already hailed Rihanna for her inclusive Fenty Beauty line and loved it when L’OrĂ©al Paris included a hijabi model in their latest hair campaign, but we haven’t seen much in the way of recognizing skin conditions like vitiligo and hyperpigmentation. Thankfully, CoverGirl is stepping up and taking the lead with their new campaign which stars Amy Deanna, a black model with vitiligo. While a harmless condition, it stops the production of melanin in certain parts of the skin.Â

The campaign video features Deanna applying two shades of CoverGirl’s TruBlend foundation – one to unify the skin around her chin, and a lighter shade to highlight the lighter areas around her eyes. As she completes her makeup, her voiceover reads, “Why try to blend in, when you can choose how to stand out?”Â
On her experience with the campaign, Deanna told PeopleStyle that “being given a platform to [raise awareness] means so much. At the end of the day I am just like everyone else, I just happen to have spots. It’s a part of my identity, but it doesn’t define who I am. For there to be so many of us and so little representation, it’s truly disheartening. I work with CoverGirl; I’m a black woman; I have vitiligo. That is empowering.”
Here’s hoping this small, but oh-so mighty step forward invites even more beauty brands to include and celebrate diversity of all kinds.Â
