The post is finally here. Short showering has changed my life because…I’m exercising again (not showering with a friend- hope the post image wasn’t too misleading!)
Yup. I’m one of those girls who exercises really faithfully for three or four weeks, then totally falls off the bandwagon. I can’t help it. I don’t like running, I don’t like swimming, I can sort of tolerate pilates, but really? I just don’t like moving all that much. Recommend exercise classes or “really great” DVDs to me, but the most exercise I’ll probably get from the experience is laughing.
Right, so how does exercising help me save water? I waste a lot of water and energy by waiting for my water to heat up; after I work out, I crave nothing more than a cold shower. Additionally, “high” off of exercise (yeah right, but fake it ’till you make it…), I’m that much more likely to move quickly. There you go- no more letting the water run to heat up and naturally shorter showers! I guess it paid off today, since I finally scored a three-minute shower again!
I know what you’re about to say. “Jamie, you’ve never exercised more than four consecutive weeks in your life….” I hear you. But in the past, I’ve exercised for my health or for my weight. Frankly, I don’t care all that much, although I should, at least in regards to my health. I finally have a real incentive to exercise though. The environment means more to me than my health or my weight, because the earth is going to be around for a long time after I’m gone. Despite the inconveniences I’ve sometimes faced in my commtiment to the environment, I’ve stuck with the it- I carry around my bowl, spoon & waterbottle to avoid disposables, I am vegetarian (with the occasional slip-up for the gelatin in pudding, my weakness!), and I recently pledged to stop purchasing new leather. I think that concern for the environment might finally be the incentive to get me to exercise long-term!
I was also going to blog about a “great” new idea I had- showering in the dark. I keep my eyes closed in the shower most of the time, so I thought I could save some energy by keeping the light turned off. In order to make sure I wasn’t pouring body gel in my hair, I lined up the products in my shower by order of use: shampoo, conditioner, body gel, facial cleasner. If you know me at all, you won’t be surprised to hear that I bonked my lip against the shower handle. Oops! The lesson learned from my dark shower: keep the lights on and keep your eyes open.
More product reviews coming soon, along with other ideas to save water, the logistics of a short shower, and what I’m doing with the time I’m no longer spending in the shower! Also, I watched part of an environmental documentary today called Renewal, which you’ll get to read about in an upcoming post.
