With the swap of seasons comes the swapping of nail polish colors, traditionally from more bright and poppy hues for summer, to darker, richer ones in the Fall. With the onslaught of Fall nail polish collections recently released and inspiration from the runway we predict some fun and festive nail trends are on the horizon. Read on to see what nail trends collegiettes can sport, to prepare for the new season.

1. Matte Nails

The most popular trend dotting the runways for the Fall was not any color in particular. In fact, it’s not a polish color at all, rather it was a top coat layer that adorned models fingertips – a matte top coat. Add a layer onto the nail polish shade of your choice (we suggest black like Black Onyx from OPI or dark red like Red Silk Boxers from Essie). For a matte top coat try Make it Matter Matte Top Coat from Nordstrom of “Mattenificent” Matte Top Coat from Ciate.

2. Bluish and Greenish Shades of Grey

Grey shades are always popular in the Fall season, possibly for their subdued look and complimentary match to other popular Fall colors. Last year, purple grey was hot, this year we are thinking that the grey shades that are going to be popular will be a little more green. For a cool green-grey tones try Loden Green by Sally Hansen and Prabal Gurung. For a more bluish-grey, try  Vested Interest from Essie’s 2013 Fall collection.

3. Reptilian Scales

By now we are all well aware that nail trends do not just pertain to shades. On the contrary our nails have becomes little palettes with which we may accessorize. The third nail trend is not a color, but a texture that we think we will add a little bit of sass to any outfit. To flaunt a set of scales of your own try using Essie’s Snakeskin Magnetic Nail Polish Collection which uses magnets to make a reptilian texture appear on your nails (test it out to witness the magic for yourself).

4. Asphalt grey

Another shade of grey to add to your Fall arsenal is simply a light asphalt shade. This shade matches virtually everything and its simplicity is a breath of fresh air in the now crazed nail art landscape. Try Audacious Asphalt from Maybelline.

5. Burgundy

Burgundy is the perfect rich Fall shade that compliments the changing colors of leaves and the jewel tones of Fall fashion. This shade works on virtually everyone and adds a layer of classiness and femininity to any ensemble. To get some ladylike fingertips, try Black Honey-Burgundy from Clinique.

6. Golden Accents

Forget French manicures, this season is all about accenting in gold. You do not have to stay confined to the tips of your nails either models were seen with gold adorning the base and borders of nails as well. So get creative! The more out-there (most likely) the better. For a metallic golden hue try Butter London’s Marbs.

7. Shimmering and Sparkly Silver Shades

Maybe it’s the holidays or the darker colors emerging in the fashion scene, but with the chill often comes a little bit of frill. Sparkly and shimmering shades of silver are a festive compliment to your Fall ensembles and are particularly coveted this season. For a little bit of bling try Zoya’s Pixie Dust or Sinful Colors’ Queen of Beauty. For a more shimmering shade try Essie’s irridescent For the Twill of It or OPI’s Haven’t the Foggiest.

8. Nail Caviar

The newest nail art trend to emerge on store shelves is seemingly more upscale: nail caviar. Do not worry collegiettes, this caviar is NOT ACTUALLY REAL. Instead, “nail caviar” defines an array of playful gems that you can adorn your nails with. To test this trend for yourself NYX has a kit featuring black pearls matched with a black polish and Ciate has a poppy multicolored kit of pearls to play with, paired with a blush colored polish.
