It’s Officially Fall — Here’s What You Can Do To Keep Your Hair Healthy This Season

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

I don’t know about you, but fall is the season where I truly thrive. From the stunning fashion to the yummy food (pumpkin spice everything, obviously!) and the overall cozy vibe, this is definitely my favorite time of year, and I’m so excited that it’s finally here!

Of course, the transition from summer to fall doesn’t just mean fun new trends and festivities — it also brings colder, dryer weather, which can leave your hair feeling a little lackluster. That’s why it’s a good idea to revisit and update your hair care routine to account for these changes. So, while you’re busy stocking up on oversized sweaters and sipping on PSLs, help your mane adjust to the new season with these healthy hair tips for fall!

1. Start your hair care at the scalp.

Healthy hair starts at the roots, which means your hair care routine should always include scalp care. Over time, excess oil (also known as sebum), dirt, and buildup from products like dry shampoo and hairspray can collect on your scalp, causing irritation and making it harder for your hair to grow healthy and strong. And when the weather gets colder, you may also experience dry, flaky skin on your scalp, which only makes things worse. Luckily, a Detox Scalp Scrub (that doubles as shampoo!) can help refresh your hair from top to bottom by gently exfoliating away dead skin cells and breaking down and washing away buildup.

2. Switch to a Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner.

While you may have no problem keeping your hair hydrated during hot, humid summer days, fall can be a different story. Between colder temps outside and dry air inside (from cranking up the heat in your dorm or apartment), your hair can end up feeling parched and looking dull. To combat dryness and keep your locks soft and shiny throughout the fall, simply swap out your usual hair wash duo with an ultra-hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Look for ingredients like Sunflower Seed Oil and Coconut Oil, which help to moisturize and protect your hair.

3. Cut Down Your Wash Days.

As tempting as it can be to lather up every day (who doesn’t love a good everything shower?), cutting back on how many times you wash your hair each week can help prevent dryness, frizz, and breakage. This is because washing your hair strips it of its natural oils, which are vital for keeping it healthy and hydrated. How often you wash your hair depends on a lot of factors, such as your hair type, how much oil you produce, the styling products you use, and more. So, start small, such as washing every other day, and adjust your routine until you find what works best for you.

4.  Hydrate Your Locks With a Weekly Hair Mask.

Another quick, easy way to give your locks a moisture boost? Add a hair mask to your routine! Look for a deep conditioning formula that’s designed to strengthen and nourish your locks while restoring hydration. Use it once a week (or whenever your hair needs a little TLC) to keep your hair soft, smooth, and looking its best.

5. Take Your Hair Care Beyond the Shower.

Shampoo, conditioner, hair masks — it’s no secret that a lot of your hair care happens in the shower. But that doesn’t mean it should only happen there! There are plenty of ways to care for your hair after your shower or on the go, such as using a leave-in treatment. No matter your hair type, a multi-use leave-in can help you control frizz, prevent split ends, and even slow color fading (as a faux redhead, that’s everything to me). The best part? You can spray it on wet hair right after the shower or use it to refresh your second-day locks!

6. Let the Fall Air Style Your Hair.

I’ll be the first to admit that I love a good blowout, but applying all of that heat directly to your hair can cause damage over time. So, instead of reaching for your curling iron or hairdryer, why not let your hair do its thing by air drying it? If you’re worried about flyaways or frizz, don’t be. Running some air dry styling cream through your locks is a super simple step that will help smooth your strands and enhance your natural texture and body while your hair dries.
