It is once again that time of year where Collegiettes stand readily by their computers ready to purchase tickets to the music festivals that come along with the warm weather. From Lollapalooza to Electric Daisy Carnival to Coachella- there is a little something for everyone.
In fact, some music festivals, such as Coachella, are so popular that they have been forced to expand. This year Coachella will take place on two weekends instead of one. The lineup includes music favorites like Aesop Rocky, Band of Horses, and 2 Chainz (so get excited!).
So onto more pressing matters – what will you do with your hair during this all-day jaunt while maintaining concert-cool look? It will most likely be hot, sweaty, maybe humid, and there will most likely not be a place to “touch-up”. Have no fear though Collegiettes, we have some ideas.
1. Casual-cool waves
Coachella is all about having fun. The bohemian, natural look is fully endorsed- so let your mane fly free, if you choose. Tame the frizz with hairspray or Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (which we are obsessed with). You can grab two small sections in the front of your scalp to braid back and pin, to add a bit of “free-spirit” flair to your look.
2. All done up
The emergence of the topknot has been a relief to trendy Collegiettes everywhere. The hairstyle, while put together and chic, is also fast and easy. For Coachella, try a topknot with a twist- add a braid! Start at the base of your scalp and braid up until you get to where you’d like the knot to be, then secure with an elastic hair band and proceed with your usual topknot twist. No purchases necessary.
3. Queen of the braids
Pretty much any braided hairstyle is going to fly at Coachella- and going to look good. Braiding is the best way to keep your hair out of your face and to fight against frizz. We love two braided dos in particular for this years shows: the side messy French braid and milk maiden braids.
For the former simply brush out hair and divide it done the middle into two sections. Start from the back of your scalp and French braid up your head with each section. When your done pin the ends of the braids underneath the braided hair with bobby pins. Check out the awesome how-to video on the free people website. If you master this, add weave flowers into the braids as well for a pretty look.
4. Wear flowers in your hair
If you are thinking 1970’s hippy, then you have the right idea (to get into the spirit check out Scott McKenzie’s If You’re Going to San Francisco, Wear Flowers in Your Hair). Flower crowns are a great way to keep your hair tucked down and out of control, as well as a perfect fit for the free-spirit look of Coachella. We like Urban Outfitter’s understated flower crown head wrap or Nasty Gal’s crown of big blue flowers.
5. Add some (temporary color).
While this won’t help with the heat or humidity, it will add some easy flair! Do a small block section or apply it to your ends for an ombre-look and voila! We are digging the new hair chalk by Urban Outfitters. We also the Streekers from Ulta that come conveniently in a lip gloss-esque tube.
6. And that’s a wrap!
Scarves are a fun, chic, and most importantly an easy way to keep your mane under control. Go to a vintage store and grab some fun ones with retro prints or grab a head wrap from the selection at a larger chain like Urban Outfitters or Free People (p.s. if you go the latter route no need to Google “how to tie scarf on head”. They do it for you).
