Her Campus goes to New York Fashion Week: an account of our very first time

Last Tuesday Aylin and I had the opportunity to attend one show at Fashion Week. I can proudly say that my first ever experience at this kind of event was with Bebe, and the clothes were to-die-for—frilly dresses, summery florals paired with chic blazers, scalloped hemlines, and killer sunglasses. I was in fashion heaven, but getting there was not easy.

I first emerged from the sweaty subway (which completely ruined the hair I spent an hour on) and met up with Aylin, who was already trying to find the show. Of course, after a life spent in the NYC-area, I still never know where I’m going. Eventually we spotted the Metropolitan Pavilion, only because the line outside was out of this world (I’m talking bigger than lines in Disney World during the heart of summer). So there we stood, thankful we wore flats unlike most of the girls waiting to get inside.

After what seemed like forever, Aylin nervously checked her Blackberry and realized it was 6:30—half an hour after the show was supposed to start, and they were still slowly letting people inside. Did we miss the show or was the show running late? We couldn’t take any chances so we bolted to the newly formed press line armed with printed-out e-mails and phone numbers as our makeshift passes. Thankfully the show was running so late that all of the press dashed inside at the same time—it was a fashion frenzy! In the foyer we spotted the red carpet and an assumed celebrity we didn’t recognize, then searched for the best spot to see the show (of course grabbing one of the complimentary Frappuccinos. Hoorah for events sponsored by Starbucks).

We were finally inside, and it was like a montage from the The September Issue. Everything was perfect except one thing—unlike Anna Wintour, we were not front row . We were not last row. We were no-rows, which isn’t a problem for everyone taller than 5’3” and was the last thing on my mind until the show was about to start (I mean, come on. I was at a real, live fashion show and preoccupied!). Immediately, we decided to split up, and I ran for the row of cameras in front of the runway, having only two choices. A. stand where I am and miss the show because I couldn’t see or B. Get kicked out for being in a spot that was reserved for the top fashion magazines and still miss the show. I chose B, and Aylin followed. We managed to squeeze our way right in with the other photographers, and as the show started, we had the most amazing view.

Our favorite look was decidedly the long black dress (pictured above). It was obviously a show stopper as it was saved for the very end. Here are some of our other favorites:

Mariel Loveland is in love with writing. She recently graduated from SUNY Purchase College wtih a major in Creative Writing and a minor in Studio Composition. There she was the editor-in-chief of The Independent, her campus's only print news source. Currently, she runs a blog entitled "Writing the Ship" (http://www.writing-the-ship.blogspot.com) where she documents her life as a recent graduate. When she is not writing words, she can be found writing songs for her punk band and playing guitar loudly in the basements of seedy (and sometimes not-so-seedy) NYC clubs. In the past, Mariel has interned for Lucky Magazine in the Online Editorial Department and Columbia Records as part of their A&R and Digital Research team as well as contributing to other on-campus publications. In her spare time, she dabbles in graphic design, fiction writing, and window shopping on the internet. Currently, she works at Babble.com where she handles all their social media.
