Winter is approaching, which means it’s time for cozier sweaters, cute accessories, and maybe one more pair of boots. As the seasons change, so does your wardrobe. That’s why having a capsule wardrobe is helpful when putting outfits together. A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist collection of clothes that can be put together in different ways to create all kinds of outfits for various occasions. So whether you’re curious about curating minimalist looks or just need an excuse to clean out your closet, capsule wardrobes can be life-changing. Having such a selection of classic and accessible pieces will make your GRWMs easier each day.
The main purpose of winter clothing is to protect you from the cold, and that’s why layering is so important. Items like leggings, cozy sweaters, and lounge sets are great items that you can pair with a heavy coat and some boots for a warm yet stylish fit. It can be challenging trying to stay warm during windy days, but these tips and fashion pieces will help you create your ultimate winter capsule wardrobe, so you can finally have the winter OOTDs of your dreams!
Conduct a Closet Check
Before you add 50-plus sweaters to your shopping cart, check and see what you already have in your closet. You may already have pieces from the fall that you could work into your winter ensembles. After figuring out what can stay and what can go, you’ll be ready to add new items to your wardrobe that (hopefully) will be a part of your essentials for a while! Remember, there’s no set amount of items required to create a capsule wardrobe. Everyone has different preferences regarding fashion, so feel free to make it as big or as small as you want!
Invest In Quality
‘Tis the season to invest — in the quality of your clothes, that is. Take the extra time to look at your clothes’ fabric and think about upgrading it to a nicer quality, like wool or cashmere. Not only will you stay warmer, but because of the fabrics’ higher quality, you’ll be wearing those pieces for years to come. Another tip is to skip buying items that are too trend-based. I love a good “TikTok Made Me Buy It” moment, but looking at classic staples can help you better decide what kind of clothing fits your style. Also, think back to the colors and silhouettes that you typically wear because that can help you make an informed decision.
When In Doubt, Go Neutral
Styling outfits with lots of color can be difficult. That’s why neutrals are the perfect base for any winter wardrobe! Colors like dark red and gray pair well with black, but they also intertwine together perfectly. Another great pairing that I’m fond of is shades of white and cream with tan shades, like camel.

- Tops

Long-sleeved shirts are a base layering must-have. They help you conserve heat but you can also take them off if you feel too warm. You can wear a long-sleeved shirt by itself or style it with a cardigan for a simple, put-together look. This Long-Sleeve Crewneck ($20) from J. Crew comes in multiple colors for easy mixing and matching. For those whose necks get chilly, like me, a turtleneck is a great option. Try pairing this Tuckable Mockneck from Abercrombie & Fitch ($25) with a puffy vest or V-neck sweater. Speaking of sweaters, having a few knitwear pieces handy is perfect for the winter. I like to have a few sweaters in black, white, gray, and brown, so I switch them up each day. H&M has a huge selection of knitwear, like this black and white striped Short Sweater ($16). Lastly, bodysuits can be worn as stand-alone tops and or underneath a sweater, like the SKIMS Crew Neck Bodysuit ($68).
- Puffer Jackets

If living in New York has taught me anything, it’s that you can never have too many puffer jackets! One store that has never ceased to amaze me is Uniqlo. The brand is known for having clothing items that use Japanese heat technology to keep you extra warm and comfy. I currently have one of their Ultra Light Down Jackets ($80) and although it looks super lightweight, it’s kept me warm all day! Another favorite is Zara’s Water and Wind Protection Cropped Puffer Jacket ($60). This jacket has a removable adjustable elastic drawstring hood, so it’s perfect for protecting yourself from the harsh winter elements.
- Sweater Dresses

Nothing says winter chic like a cozy sweater dress! They’re perfect for those days you don’t feel like ironing, and pair well with knee-high boots. This Knitted Sweater Mini Dress ($45) from ASOS is great for an everyday look. You can dress it up by adding a belt and a cute purse. You could also try this Sweetheart Sweater Midi Dress from GAP Factory ($32), which would be great for a fun night out! I also love this Rib-Knit Dress ($21) from H&M that features a quarter zip.
- Winter Coats
-
The quintessential winter item to have in your closet is a good winter coat. But there are so many to choose from, and they can be a pretty hefty price. Banana Republic Factory currently has a Tie-Waist Wrap Coat on sale for $138, and it comes in a beautiful camel color that can easily elevate any winter outfit. Want something fuzzier? Then try wearing a teddy coat — they come in all colors and lengths. Nordstrom’s Cozy Faux Shearling Jacket ($99) has oversized pockets, perfect for keeping your hands warm. But if you’re having a hard time finding a good winter coat, don’t be discouraged! I recommend going to discount stores like Marshalls, or outlet versions of popular brands like Michael Kor,s which currently has this Wool Blend Coat on sale for $148. Here’s one extra tip: Check and see if your local Macy’s store has a Macy’s Backstage. You may be able to find good quality coats for half the price!
- Boots

Nothing says winter like a nice pair of boots, and you don’t need too many! One can be worn for work and another cozy pair for the weekends. You can never go wrong with a classic pair of knee-high boots like these Madden Girl boots ($71) available on Amazon. If you’re not a fan of heels, then opt for a pair of Chunky Chelsea Boots ($36) like these from ASOS. And of course, I have to include the classic Ugg Ultra Mini Platform Boot ($160), perfect for a casual day at home or a Target shopping trip!
