The ‘90s was a whirlwind decade, with the craze of both girl and boy bands, blockbuster films including Forrest Gump and Titanic, and hit TV shows like Seinfeld and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. IMHO, during the ‘90s, pop culture was at its peak. This decade was also infamous for its chic and classic fashion trends that have slowly made a comeback. As a 2000s baby, ‘90s culture and fashion not only fascinate me but influences me to this day. With mixing and matching pieces, from everyday basics to baggy jeans to slip dresses to oversized blazers (a current trend today), I believe the 1990s are one of the best decades to re-live from a fashion standpoint.
When I think of ‘90s fashion icons, many fictional personas come to mind, like Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, Rachel Green and Monica Geller from Friends, and of course, the fabulous Cher Horowitz from Clueless. But the real icons were the big celebrities and stars during this decade, and the fashion choices they made cemented them as trailblazers in the industry. Here are some ‘90s outfits inspired by the most iconic women of that decade.
- Naomi Campbell
-
The queen of ‘90s modeling was famous for her outfits on and off the runway. Campbell could work anything she wore, especially chic and simple slip dresses. Slip dresses are minimal, sexy, and versatile — you can style one either casual or glamorous with the right accessories.
- Slip Dress
The best slip dresses I have encountered (and own) are from Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS. From the classic short Soft Lounge Slip Dress ($68) to the viral Soft Lounge Long Slip Dress ($78), these dresses give a comfortable-but-sexy look, thanks to the form-fitting fabric.
- Strappy Heels
Since the slip dress is the star of the show, it’s vital to keep your shoes sleek and classic. These black, strappy Billini Montague Heels from Princess Polly ($49) are the perfect choice to elevate your look.
- Chunky Accessories
Chunky gold (or silver) jewelry will help add a final touch of glamour to your look. Luckily, Amazon has an array of affordable jewelry to finish your outfit with. These Gacimy Chunky Gold Hoop Earrings ($14) paired with this CHESKY 14K Gold Plated Chain Necklace would look gorg!
- Princess Diana
-
Princess Diana was not only actual royalty, but the queen of people’s hearts. The infinite bounds of her kindness and charity were known around the world, but her influence didn’t stop there. People idolized Princess Diana’s ‘90s fashion choices, both from her bombshell looks at royal events to her trendy, everyday street style, which is super simple to recreate.
- Oversized Blazer
To mimic Princess Diana’s ‘90s outfits, your top of choice is quite simple. All you need is a vintage T-shirt or sweatshirt paired with an oversized blazer. Both pieces are both easy to find, and they’re ultimate closet basics you can style in multiple ways. Pair something you already have in your closet with this Jersey Slouchy Suit Blazer from ASOS ($35).
- Straight-Leg Jeans
You could wear any jean that feels comfortable to you, but I suggest a straight leg jean in a light blue wash. This AE Stretch ‘90s Skinny Jean from American Eagle ($50) is the perfect fit, length, and price.
- A Cool Hat
When wearing a jean-and-blazer combo, Princess Diana opted for a hat to keep her look casual. This Bermuda Hat from Katin ($29) fits the bill.
- Winona Ryder
-
Known for her roles in Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice, Winona Ryder was the poster girl of dark and grunge ‘90s fashion — mirroring the aesthetic of her film projects.
- Graphic T-Shirt
To start off a ‘90s inspired Winona Ryder outfit, wear a graphic T of your choosing, paired with a black leather jacket (which Ryder loved to rock), like this Hitch Faux Leather Jacket from Princess Polly ($80).
- Baggy Jeans
To emulate the ‘90s grunge look, these High-Waisted Baggy Wide-Leg Jeans from American Eagle ($60) are the way to go. If you want a pair of jeans that aren’t as baggy and oversized, opt for these High-Rise Dad Jeans from Abercrombie ($33) that are still roomy, but fit in the right places!
- Combat Boots
A ‘90s grunge look wouldn’t be complete without a good combat boot. If you want to splurge, it’s only right to get the Dr. Marten’s Atlas Leather Lace Up Boots ($126). For a more affordable option, Amazon has a ton of combat boots to choose from.
