Mulberry’s Del Rey Bag: Yay or Nay?

If you haven’t heard of Lana Del Rey, there’s a good chance you’re living under a rock. From her mega-hit, “Born to Die,” to her cover girl status in  British Vogue’s March issue , everyone’s crazy for the singer-songwriter. To add even more fuel to this obsession,  Mulberry recently decided to name a bag after her. Fashionistas, I give you the Del Rey.

“I love Lana’s nostalgic references to bygone glamour and the fact that her look is retrospective yet so modern,” Mulberry creative director Emma Hill said in a recent statement.

Not everyone has been as enthusiastic as Hill. Del Rey’s recent controversies make some people wary about this fashion endeavor. Examples?  This talented singer was formerly known as another indie singer:  Lizzy Grant.  Sounds like something out of an episode of Ringer, right?  Also, her Saturday Night Live flop merited a parody on the sketch show.

So, does Lana Del Rey really deserve to have a bag named after her?

Although Del Rey is quite controversial , you can’t deny that she’s one of the coolest singers out there. Love her or hate her, she’s a pretty big deal. Fashion acts as a fearless social commentary.  If Del Rey is a big part of today’s pop culture, there’s no reason to ignore her. As much as I love Blake Lively, she’s had some scandals too. That didn’t stop Mr. Louboutin from naming a shoe after her. Instead, we should all just focus on how cute this bag is.

But really, how cute is the Del Rey?  What’s so great about this bag is that it will work with a plethora of outfits. It will look super sleek with a minimalist, monochromatic ensemble. Also, it’ll be the perfect neutral if paired with a printed dress. The cute, versatile shape? The luxe, polished colors? The Del Rey is definitely a bag to invest in.

The Del Rey, which will be available in May, was worn by the singer at Mulbery’s Fall 2012 show in London. Oh, and did I mention that she was sitting front row? Are you fuming with jealousy? I sure am!

So how can we get luxe designer accessories named after us? I’ll get back to you on that.
