The Big Apple’s most fashionable week returned on Sept. 9 and ran through Sept. 14, kicking off a whirlwind of innovative style, creative beauty trends, and inspiration for all you fashion lovers out there. Celebs, influencers, and models from all across the world flew in to join in on the festivities (including our fave, Bama Rush’s Grant Sikes). The NYFW Spring/Summer 2023 season was full of new faces, designers, artists, and — best of all — new style trends for you to try!
While splurging on designer outfits are obvi not in the budget (although I wish they were), there are still affordable and practical ways to recreate some of the hottest style trends from the week’s festivities — many of which you can reimagine with pieces already hanging in your closet (because after all, sustainability and fashion go hand in hand).
From fun pops of color to classic model-off-duty slicked back buns, here are the hottest runway and street-style trends you can *actually* rock this season!
- Bright pops of color
-
The rise of the Barbiecore aesthetic has inspired many of our favorite hot pink outfits and accessory looks over the last few months, and seems to also have influenced both NYFW designers and attendees this season. This NYFW, Fendi did it best with supermodel Bella Hadid sporting a satin Tiffany Blue jumpsuit and matching beret. Street style lovers also didn’t miss a beat, with attendees pulling off their best head-to-toe colorful outfits! Hot pinks with a little bit of structure was the name of the game this NYFW, so to rock this trend for yourself, dive into your favorite hues of pink and any pops of color that bring you joy! Remember, more is more and bold is best!
- Matching sets
-
Matching sets took over the NYFW scene this year. Whether it was your favorite celebs at the hottest after parties (hi, Coco Jones), or fashion week attendees showing off their most put together sets, a monochrome look will make a statement — every single time. Although some of these NYFW looks are pretty structured, you have tons of creative freedom when it comes to choosing your pieces. If you need some inspo to get you going, try an all neutral set like the one below, and add your own personal touch with your favorite boots!
- Slicked back everything
-
All kinds of slicked back hairstyles made their way to the runways at NYFW. From sleek low-buns to braided ponytails, the trend seems to be the It Girl hairstyle of the fall 2022 season. It’s a personal favorite of mine, and most likely a Gen Z favorite due to the style’s versatility and ease (oh, and perfect for third day hair, I might add). No matter the fit you’re wearing, a slicked back hairstyle will have you looking chic, chic, chic!
- Mesh moments
-
I know you all remember Rihanna’s iconic sheer slip dress during Paris Fashion week, Kendall Jenner’s stunning Met Gala mesh gowns, or even Miss Flo’s gorgeous hot pink sheer Valentino tulle dress. They were all looks that no one can forget — and why? It’s because sheer, mesh, and any type of see through fabric is having its moment in 2022. And at this year’s NYFW, it wasn’t any different. Emily Ratajkowski walked at Tory Burch’s show, rocking a sheer black long sleeve over an equally sheer silver bra, along with plenty of fashion week guests hopping on the trend. If you’re waiting for the right time to pull that see through piece out of your closet — now’s the time!
- Y2K Core
-
There were many nods to Y2K core featured on the runway this NYFW, with designers like Tommy Bogo bringing the aesthetic to life with his new “For The Truant & The Fluent” collection. Celebs like Bella Hadid also pulled inspiration from classic staples of the style, with the model spotted wearing a suede track top and a ripped denim skirt at a NYFW after party. When styling Y2K core, think colorful eyeshadow, platforms, cargo pants, and all things denim. To put your own modern twist on the trend, lean towards more refined pieces with a touch of personal style! (Pro tip: If you want to really stand out, try out duck nails!)
