For a long time it seemed like American Apparel would be a staple in the fashion and retail industry for decades to come, but their recent file for bankruptcy and an $88 million dollar buyout, plus $15 million more for inventory by Gildan Activewear Inc. has brought an end to American Apparel’s American dream. Not only has Gildan Activewear decided to close all American Apparel stores, Reuter’s reports that an American Apparel spokeswoman revealed that there have already been about 2,400 layoffs in Southern California alone. Some employees and loyal customers have even taken to Twitter to voice their concerns:
there was a time i thot i would b working contently @ american apparel til i was 80 rip

While many consumers were just happy to hear about the ‘going out of business’ sale:
Since @americanapparel is closing down umm are they even having any good sales cause I’m on it in that case !

We can only hope that the layoffs stop soon and former employees will find work again in the near future.
