With a new school year comes a fresh start. Much like a “New Year’s resolution” it’s a chance to begin new habits or get started on that thing we’ve been putting off. And in the 2019-2020 academic year, we’re approaching all of our goals with the intent to stick to them!Â
Â
This year, I was curious about the objectives that Loyola students have. Here are some of the “school year resolutions” I found on campus.Â
Â
“I think my resolution would have to be about making sure that I don’t let my past hold me prisoner. We all make mistakes and should learn from them. The here and now is our only time to take chances and make each day how we want it to be.” – Kari Whalen, fourth-year.
Â
“My biggest goal for this year is just to find a good group of friends and to join a bunch of clubs/organizations that are related to service/activism! I hope to join the service group Loyola 4 Chicago and be an active member in other clubs like Students for Reproductive Justice and Doctors Without Borders!” – Divya Patel, first-year.  Â
Â
“I want to work on my self discipline! That means waking up on time when my alarm goes off, doing assignments when they’re assigned, reducing my procrastination, etc. I think it’ll make me more efficient.” – Martina Mazzei, fourth-year.Â
Â
“My resolution for the new school year is to be more gentle with myself. As a perfectionist with an intense fear of failure, the start of a new semester can be quite anxiety inducing. Feelings of inadequacy and incompetence often stir around my mind. Instead of letting these false stories I tell myself define me, I will instead remember that failure is not the opposite of success but a part of the process. Finally, I will no longer attempt to produce perfect work because perfection is not possible. I will aim for quality work that I can be proud of because I know I am trying my best.” – Brooke Craig, second-year.Â
Â
“I need to stop procrastinating and start working on stuff early to reduce stress. Also, get on the job hunt soon!” – Dhruv Patel, fourth-year.Â
Â
“Mine would be learning to say no, and being okay with it, and being ok with taking some time to myself!” – Nicole Sister, second-year.Â
Â
“The biggest thing I want to work on this year is to take better care of myself and my mental health. Giving myself breaks and giving myself enough time to eat and just chill and decompress. I tend to overpack my schedule so I want to watch that this year.” – Nicolas Tamayo, third-year.
Â
“My goal for the school year is to of course stay focused and organized in school and work. I also want to be involved with more groups around campus to find people that share similar interests as me.” – Jess Dominguez, second-year.
Â
“I want to be more decisive and better at prioritizing what I feel is important. That includes schoolwork, mental and physical health, and future career goals.” – Bryan Duong, fourth-year.
Â
And as for my own resolution, I am acutely aware that it’s my last year on campus. So I want to make sure I’m making time for the people that are important to me. This means saying yes to weekend adventures and excursions. It also means asking friends to join me for coffee or a drink. I’ve realized that making time for my loved ones can be something as simple as setting aside an hour to talk with them.Â
