We found a place for you to put all the old clothes that are currently just sitting in the back of your closet, wasting space. SustainU, an apparel company that only uses recycled materials, is collecting used clothes from college students around the country for their second annual “oneShirt challenge” during Earth Week, April 16-21.
Best part? If your college collects the most clothing, 50 of those who participate will win t-shirts from SustainU, sprucing up your wardrobe without having to pay a penny. Even though only 100 colleges participated in the challenge last year, SustainU collected 16 tons of clothing. Yup, you read that right. Sixteen tons. That’s enough clothing to attend as many New York Fashion Weeks as you want, plus more.
This year, the organization is trying to get at least 200 colleges involved in each of the 50 states. The collected clothing is distributed to “local charities and agencies, supporting job training and those in need and reducing landfill waste,” according to the SustainU website.
If you’re interested in joining the country’s largest collegiate clothing drive you can sign your school up on their website or contact Tiffany Newcomb at 304-413-0416. When you sign up online, you’ll also get a discount to their environmentally friendly shop!
