I’ve been super busy with school and work lately. But the past couple of days, I’ve been busy preparing for company. Friday I had two out-of-town friends come for a visit, one of which is staying with me for an entire weekend. My aunt and cousins are also visiting next week, so I knew I had to get my apartment clean. Being busy is not so conducive to having a spotless apartment.
And being busy doesn’t go with being healthy either sometimes.
I woke up this morning really early to finish straightening my apartment, but some how the snooze button got in the way of my plans. I woke up and barely headed out the door with ten minutes until a presentation I had to give for work. I quickly munched on a Cliff bar I had bought from Dormzy. It wasn’t the ideal breakfast (it was 250 calories compared to the 350 the Jump Start Diet recommends), but it was better than nothing.
I didn’t bring lunch to work because I wasn’t sure if my friend would want to grab something to eat once she got into town. Due to a later arrival time and everyone involved’s inability to pick a place to eat, we ended up getting lunch around 3:30.
I nearly died. We picked a place that’s an old fashion dinner. Immediately my friend opens the menu and says, “Oh look, Nikki! They have a light-side menu.”
It didn’t take long for both of us realize that the light side wasn’t really light. In fact, it was basically everything fried with a smaller portion. Does chicken fried steak constitute as lighter?
Oh, how I love the South.
The best part was when I realized they had a “veggie plate.” Goody! I thought that would be perfect. Well, apparently this place considered fried okra and mac n’ cheese to be acceptable vegetables.
I ended up getting a delicious chicken salad so there wasn’t too much damage done. But then I had to leave my friend for my other out-of-town friend, Hannah, my old roommate, who was being featured in an art show.
There were some snacks at the reception, which I resisted primarily. I did take one chocolate covered strawberry to be celebratory with her (after all, she won Faculty Pick for clay!). We planned on going out to eat, and when her family came, we gave them the option of choosing.
Their pick? Seafood.
That’s ok, I thought. Seafood can’t be that bad for you, right? Well, unless everything is predominately fried, and the grilled versions of things tended to be a bit on the pricey side.
Since I ate such a late lunch, I decided to make my own meal from the sides menu. For around six bucks, I had an amazing plate of steamed veggies with a crab cake on the side. The crab cake was more fried than I’ve ever had, but it wasn’t a bad choice considering how small the portion was. While not ideal, I don’t think I made out too badly.
And then after parting ways with my buddy, I reunited with the fiancé and other friend for more hanging out fun. Now it’s almost 1 a.m. and I’m just now getting home, and I’m starving. Even though I hate eating this late, I’m glad I have a couple of Popchips in my pantry to help my rumblies subside.
Oh to be a busy girl in a not so healthy world. All I can say is that I’m trying my best, and that’s more than enough for me. At least I’m taking my knowledge from the Jump Start Diet and constantly looking for the healthiest options at places that seem to have no hope.
