Lose the Freshman 15: Best Gym Friends and Gym Classes

This week has been tough one for me. After a problem set, two prelims two days in a row, a cold, and my time of the month, going to the gym was a bit of a struggle. Instead of hitting the gym, I was holed up in my room. Let’s just say I did not get much sleep this week.

Thankfully my bgf, best gym friend, helped me to get back on top of things. Everyone should have a bgf. Mine used to force me to go to the gym with her everyday last semester but this semester we have different schedules so we don’t get to anymore. Since her birthday was recently and she knows how I NEVER have any money even though I have a job, she asked me to go to the gym with her as a birthday present. The first time we attempted to go together, we were supposed to go at 7am. That so didn’t happen.

The second attempt was yesterday. She wanted to go to a spinning class. I HATE spinning but since it was her present I said I’d go, such a horrible mistake! I’ve gone to two other spinning classes, one at Cornell last year and another at a local gym, both were horrible. I figured I would try again one more time. The class itself wasn’t bad if you’re into spinning. For me, however, it was absolutely dreadful.

I can’t pedal while standing up, I added a lot of resistance to make it better but not even that worked. When I sat down I had to take off so much resistance. The seat was extremely painful. The entire class, except for one other girl, was full of girls who looked like they didn’t understand the concept of being overweight, which made me feel uncomfortable. I hated the music. I wanted to leave but that would have been extremely rude. I ended up staring at the clock the entire class hour. It got to the point where I hate every single aspect of the class. Moral of the story: spinning really isn’t for me.

As weird as this sound, I’m very thankful for that class. As a girl who used to run track and cross country, going to the gym doesn’t make me excited, but running outside does. I don’t go to road runs here because the hills and I do not get along. So in order to enjoy getting in shape I’m thinking that maybe finding a class would be a good class. That way I can’t say I’ll go later and then decide not to. Spinning, however, is out of the question. Any classes you guys love and want to recommend to me? Hit me up and tell me.

The only good thing about spinning, I got to wear the awesome clothes and shoes that New Balance gave me and got to drink ZICO coconut water.

The ZICO water was super refreshing, I recommend not drinking it while working out if you’re not into drinking anything sweet while training. It was a little too much for me to drink often but drinking it after class was wonderful. The shirt had this mesh thing going on so it kept me cool. The shorts have a butt pocket and spandex underneath. The shoes are nice and come in a wide (SCORE); I love the colors. The thing I loved the most was THE SPORTS BRA!

The sports bra is called “THE SHOCKINGLY UNSHOCKING”. Appropriately named since it was a shock that I only had to wear one sports bra! When you have larger breasts it’s really hard to find a sports bra that fits, looks good, and does what it’s supposed to. The sports bra sizes are in bra sizes so it’s really easy to figure out which one you need and has a hook closer like a regular bra so it’ll fit the way you want it to. The straps have this really cool Velcro thing going on so I don’t have to worry about accidentally breaking the hooky thingy (I’ve done that before), plus you fix it from the front and not the back. There’s a racer-back kind called “THE COMFY CONFORMER”. The two range from $45-55 but if you have big boobs it’s worth it. Especially since I normally spend $50 for a good one.
