Lose The Freshman 15: Learn to Pick Yourself Up

Hey guys,

As I said I would on Monday, I weighed myself today. I was a little bit nervous before I stepped on the scale and I had every right to be. My last weigh in I was excited to say that I had lost 4 pounds, this week I’m sad to say that I gained 1 of those pounds back. Seeing that number made me very sad but at least I can fix this. They always say that it’s the darkest before the dawn so I’m hoping that this is my darkness.

Last week before I went home, I had a lot of homework to do before I could leave. That meant long nights with very little sleep. It also meant Starbucks Frappuccinos, the Mocha flavor of course, in order to stay awake. I would also snack while I was working because by the time 1am hit, I was starving. Instead of eating something healthy, I was buying things that were close and there is a vending machine in my residence hall. This continued from Monday night to Thursday when I left. After a healthy weekend, I returned to Cornell and had another exam the next day, more snacking.

Surprisingly enough, this was a good experience for me to have. After an amazing weigh in I got cocky and thought that it’d be super easy to keep losing weight. It has been a learning experience for me. I can use this knowledge as a stepping stone. I always learned more when I got things wrong the first time than when everything went smoothly.

Here are some tips to help us pick ourselves back up after falling:
1. Acknowledge that you made a mistake and figure out what went wrong
2. Hit the problem right away (no more snacking) or at least make moves to start working on it
3. Set smaller (possibly weekly) goals instead of huge ones that seem impossible at the moment
4. Don’t get stuck on your set back
5. Keep going, you can fix this
6. Be enthusiastic about reaching your goals
7. Love yourself for working on your goals! (in my opinion it’s the most important tip)

So for the rest of the week I will be exercising every day (I normally go to the gym 4-5 times a week), drinking a lot of water and sticking to the SELF’s Drop10 Diet religiously. I want to make excuses why it isn’t my fault and why I don’t need to go to the gym everyday but in my heart I know it’s a lie. That’s the important part, right? Knowing that you have to change in order to make your body change.

Sorry this one is so short you guys, I have to keep it brief if I want to get all of my homework done and hit the gym before hopefully getting lots of sleep tonight.

Loads of love and never any judgement,
Danielle
