Lose the Freshman 15: A robbery, a bridal show, and dessert- dieting despite circumstances

Sunday was a crazy day for me. I woke up to find that my apartment was robbed during the night—while I was sleeping in it—and with calling the police to get everything squared away, Addison and I got a late start to our out of town, day trip to Charlotte for a bridal show.

Needless to say, with all these emotions and stresses, dieting was HARD yesterday. I tried to start the day off right with a bowl of cereal before the police showed up, and then packed turkey sandwiches for Addi and I for the road trip. The reduced fat cheddar slices from Sargento were an AMAZING touch.

But enter the bridal show and BAM! Temptation territory. Sure, it was a lot of fun getting information and taking pictures, but it was a dieting nightmare. Caterers and bakers were all there with samples of the food. Everything smelled amazing and the second we walked in the door, we were awarded with two free mimosas. I figured since I hadn’t had alcohol in forever because I’ve been trying to be good with this diet and follow Jillian Michaels’ recommendations, a mimosa wouldn’t hurt.

Then of course there were the samples. I decided that since this is a once in a life time period in my life and picking vendors is an important part of the process, I would try some things. After all, deprivation would drive me absolutely nuts. So, I tried some things Picture18but not everything and when I did try a sample, I hardly ate the whole thing. For example, at one of the baker’s booths, she immediately handed us two flavors of cake in a little cupcake paper. I took a nibble of the chocolate, agreed to try a smidge of the flavor Addison picked and then handed him the rest of the chocolate sample. I didn’t need to eat the whole thing to know how it tasted and I was very proud of myself for self-control.

But then I realized I had promised Addison that in exchange for him giving up a Sunday of March Madness to do wedding stuff, I would buy him dinner. When he first started throwing out suggestions like CiCi’s Pizza, I knew I was in for trouble.

DSC00022Eventually, he picked a Chinese food buffet, which surprisingly was easy to try to eat healthy at.  I just made it my mission to eat as many vegetables as possible, and I must say my plate was almost 70 percent green.  I’m not claiming my Chinese food was the healthiest in the world, but it was better than chowing down on some greasy pizza.

While real life can make dieting hard, the aspect I love most about the Jump Start Diet is that deprivation is not part of the process at all. The program teaches you about how to have moderation with certain foods (one mimosa won’t hurt, but five is unnecessary) and how to indulge in some sweets without going crazy.

For example, there’s a whole list of desserts that dieters on this plan are allowed to have. The 1600 calories we’re allotted includes these yummy treats which can appeal to anyone’s preference. Ice cream’s even allowed!

So quit with the deprivation. It won’t get you anywhere, except maybe back to binge eating and no one wants that.
