Lose the Freshman 15: Workouts You Can Do in Your Dorm Room!

Guess what collegiettes?!  I’VE OFFICIALLY FINISHED MY FRESHMEN YEAR OF COLEGE!  How crazy!  This past week has been tough with all the stress from finals, studying, and papers.  Plus it’s been sad saying goodbye to all the new friends I’ve made at school.  I find it incredible how quickly this year went by, and as excited as I am to go home, I am definitely going to miss the people here and just being at Amherst in general.

With the immense time crunch from everything that comes with the end of the school year, it’s hard to find time to go to the gym.  However, that does not mean you can’t exercise!  Here are some workouts you can do right from your dorm room:

STRENGTH:

  • Arms- Definitely invest in a pair of dumbbells for your room.  I have two 8 lb weights, and they’re great for little arm toning exercises.  I would suggest doing each exercise 15-20 times for two or three sets.
  1. Bicep curls
  2. Tricep Kickbacks
  3. Standing V-raise
  4. Standard push-up and Wall push-up
  5. Boxing- On YouTube, there are a bunch of fun boxing instructional videos that feature awesome exercises for you arms!  Gets your heartrate going too!
  • Abs
  1. Plank (30 seconds, 1 minute, 30 seconds).  Challenge yourself by doing a plank with armlift.
  2. Lay down on your back, and keeping your legs together, lift them up and draw the alphabet in the air!  Sounds easy, but it’s pretty tough!
  3. Reverse Lunge with Single-Arm Press
  4. Oblique crunch
  5. Wall-sit
  6. Superman
  7. For more, check out this list from one of my abs PE classes!

CARDIO:

Cardio is tough to do in a room due to the restrictions of space, but here are some exercises that can get you moving and are better than nothing!

  • Jump rope
  • Kickboxing- check out YouTube for some great links!
  • Run up and down the stairs of your building!
  • Combination of jumping jacks, running in place, high knees, etc.

Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions for exercises!  Other pieces of equipment thay may come in handy include resistance bands, yoga mat, and exercise balls depending on how much room you have.  Remember, even though you may not have time to go to the gym during intense study periods, you can still control what you’re eating.  I know it’s hard, but do your best to follow the SELF Drop 10 diet!  You won’t regret it!  Good luck to anybody who’s still taking finals, and have a great weekend!

Until Sunday,

xoxo
