What is your favorite book? My favorite book is easily Harry Potter, but that’s more than one. So, my other favorite book would have to be The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath because it depicts the harsh realities of growing up and going out into the world. It’s a little dark, but worth the read.

Biggest turn-on? A girl who can sing. If a girl can sing to me, you’ve definitely got my attention.

Biggest pet peeve? Really egotistical people. Show some humility.

Relationship Status: Single…Unfortunately … or maybe fortunately.
What are your pet peeves and guilty pleasures? Pet peeves? Easy. Cargo shorts, beanies with bills on them drive me insane and Jersey accents. I love people from Jersey but I can’t stand the accent. I’m generally pretty agreeable….as long as you’re not from Jersey and wearing cargo shorts.
As far as guilty pleasures, I really like Taylor Swift and The Zac Brown Band. That song they have about chicken nuggets is really awesome.
What are your future career goals? I wish I knew for sure. Something in higher education like teaching or being a professor and if not that then maybe working in a think tank or in politics. Eventually I’d like to get my Masters or PhD in History.
What’s your idea of a perfect date? Spring…ish. There’s a place called Union Pizza. (I’ve been on a couple of dates there and I really like it a lot.) Go there. Get drinks. Listen to live music. Then I would go on a Friday and go into Pilsen and they have art shows the third Friday of every month, so walk around and do a little of that. Then find a dive bar at the end of the night. Or go to a monster truck rally. I took a girl to a monster truck rally about a year back and it was really really funny. She liked it more than I did.
What do you find most attractive in a woman? Independence. I like a woman who can hold her own. Someone who’s a good conversationalist.
Biggest turn offs? People who are self-absorbed.
Words to live by? Don’t be stupid – keep it classy.
Describe your personality. Old. I don’t know I think I’m generally pretty friendly. I’m a hard worker – or at least I like to think that. Outgoing. I’m fairly nerdy as well but I’m pretty good at covering it up so people can’t tell.
You’re one of the founders of Delta Tau Delta. Why start a fraternity as a fifth year senior? I was really excited about what they’re up to and what they’re trying to build here and I thought it would be a really fun opportunity for my last year on campus. I think it’s a great way to leave a legacy on campus. I feel like fraternities take on a personality and sort of a life of their own, so if you can set one of them off in a particular direction it will stay that way for a long time.

Major: International Affairs
Hometown: Berlin, NJ
Age: 22
Nickname: Mike
Where you can find me: At my internship at ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms), at the shooting range, or lifting in Cabot.
What I’m involved with at NU: I’m on the Powerlifting Team
Hobbies: Spelunking, Spoon Bending, Cuddling, Traveling, Powerlifting, Video-gaming, Reading, Dancing, Surfing, and Cooking.
My favorite thing about Northeastern: It has to be the tremendous amounts of opportunities that it provides you with. The co-op program not only gives you a leg up on students from other schools in experience, but helps you network and allows you to develop yourself better so that you are more likely a job when you graduate.
Where I can be found on a Saturday night: Either at a bar with a dance floor or in my apartment. Depends on the weather and what’s going on-sometimes its nice to just take it easy and relax with a good movie or book.
Where I would take a girl on a first date: Depends on the girl, but a nice walk through Boston Commons during the spring or early fall is never a bad choice. Get some frozen lemonade, walk around and talk, perhaps head up to the North End for dinner and afterwards see a show, then grab some Mike’s Pastry’s and take a walk on the waterfront.
What I look for in a girl: She has to be hardworking and motivated, but also know how to relax, have fun, and have a good time. Loves to travel, explore places, and try new things. She enjoys sports or being active, and getting out of the house.
My role model: It would have to be my dad. He came into this country with nothing, but his hard work, drive, and work ethic has granted him the success that he is today. He’s the inspiration and motivation that allows me to think that there’s nothing that can’t be done as long as you’re willing to put the effort into it.
Where I’ll be in five years: I’ll be working for the United States Government, or traveling the world.
My favorite spot in Boston: The public garden area near Boston Common, its a nice little escape from the city life when you just need some peace and quiet. I could sit there for hours, right by the water and just relax and waste some time away.
My favorite spot in the world: I went on a Dialogue of Civilizations to Portugal this past summer, and a group of us went to Lagos, Portugal. It was a small coastal town with a bunch of natural rock formations and natural beaches. It was like one of those beaches that are always advertised in vacation pamphlets but even better. The weather was perfect, you could go cliff diving, the water was crystal clear, you could explore caves, the beaches were clean and natural, and the food there was delicious, the bars were fun, and everyone was just nice to you and happy.
Five things that a Northeastern student should have on their Boston bucket list:
- Watch the St. Patty’s Day Parade
- Eat at the Top of the Hub
- Go run/work/watch the Boston Marathon
- Go to a Red Sox game a Fenway
- Husky Hunt. It’s fun only once, but you should do it. It’s a great way to learn the city FAST.

Name: Spencer Walrath
School: University of Northern Iowa
Some of you may know him. I hear he’s quite the big deal around the UNI campus. He goes by the name of Spencer Walrath, and serves as our 2010-2011 Student Body President. Yes ladies, I know what you’re thinking. It is about time he got nominated. We all knew with his charming smile, trendy glasses, and choice in suits that it was inevitable he would join the ranks of a Her Campus UNI “Campus Cutie”. But it’s a lot more than just the suits, ties, and thick frames that make this cutie…well, cute.
Spencer is a super senior this year, double majoring in music and psychology and minoring in political science. He is, as you well know, our current student body president—and on top of all of that, is taking twenty one credits. Yikes, and we thought our plates were full!
During the interview I asked Walrath what it’s like to wake up as the UNI student body President, to which he wittingly responded, “tiring”. For Walrath, waking up is the worst part, and usually involves a back and forth debate on whether or not he has to wear a suit that day. “Going to work as the president is the best part,” Walrath conceded. Walking into his office, seeing the tasks he has highlighted as “complete”, the whiteboard of new ideas, and the smiling faces of his coworkers is enough to enhance even his most exhausted of moods.
Despite the strict deadlines, proposals, and constant student activities every night, Walrath is able to see the best in his busy job. According to him, there is nothing quite like seeing a job well done…and checked off from his to do list. It therefore comes as no surprise that his personal philosophy should go something like this: “Always put everything you have into everything you do, always seek compromise, and smile along the way.” I can honestly say I have never met anyone to whom this philosophy applies to more than Spencer.
In the brief hour I spent with him, I saw more passion than I may ever see at one table in the Union ever again. Talk of the conservation of energy, recycling bins placed in rooms, and panther points filled our time together. With a drive and passion like the one contained in our very own president, I am certain of his success. He is likely to thrive in anything he puts his mind to.
Where does an ardor like Walrath’s come from, anyway…and where can we get some? According to Spencer himself, a lot of who he is, is a result of where he came from. Growing up in Cedar Rapids, Walrath didn’t live the “glamorous” life many of us would expect. He instead bounced from home to home, moving several different times in attempt to make ends meet. He learned early on to laugh at everything and to be resourceful, because he had to be.
Just look at where it has gotten him today: He’s a senior at a state university, serving as its president. He is scheduled to graduate this coming May and is intent on going wherever the job market leads him. Preferably somewhere with mountains, forests, and one special girl.
Her name is Anna, and as the story would go, the two met in a summer class at the one and only UNI. As fate would have it, Spencer missed the first class, and was in need of some notes. Walking into class that first day, he sat at the open chair next to a beautiful blonde. Spencer’s instant thought? “I can’t wait to work up the courage to talk to her.”
And he probably wouldn’t have, had his professor not told him to get his notes from the “pretty blond girl” next to him. So, he did. And he offered her one of two things in return: an enthusiastic high-five or dinner sometime. As any of us would do, she gladly accepted the dinner. It has been a UNI dream ever since.
Some of you may be oohing and aahing over that story. Some of you may be feeling a tinge of jealousy. Still, some of you may be rolling your eyes. What this story goes to show, however, is that you can never be too sure when your someone is going to show up. So don’t forget to always be yourself. Give the world your warmest smile.
Don’t worry about your hair, or the way your makeup looks…if you’re going to be with him for the rest of your life, it’s likely he’ll see you at even your worst. So give him YOU to look at, not heavy eyeliner and perfectly straightened hair. Who knows, you may just stumble upon a cute boy who wears suits, ties, and trendy glasses—and if you do, nominate him as a campus cutie (and always choose the dinner over a high-five).

Your go to hangout spot on campus? If I had to pick just one, I don’t think there’s any spot on campus as beautiful to hang out in as the Trinity Courtyard. I found myself there for orientation in first year and so that place to me has kind of become the embodiment of university life. Sitting there for just a couple of minutes a day will make you smarter. That’s a fact. Also, it looks like Hogwarts.
Before I graduate, I want to…no I NEED to: Come across one of my female professors in a bar and buy her a drink.
What turns you off about a girl? It’s not something I think about a lot. Every girl has her imperfections, and we sometimes learn to love those imperfections. But that’s the cheap way out of this question. So to answer it, I’ll start by listing my turn-ons, and then we can work our way backwards and establish their opposites, which I guess will be my turnoffs. My turn-ons are intelligence, kindness, and Scarlett Johansson. I guess that makes my turnoffs ignorance, rudeness, and not-Scarlett-Johansson.
During your ‘bro’ time you: Besides cuddling? Well, we’re all pretty big into playing games of pick-up soccer in the summer. Also, spending copious amounts of time at coffee shops is essential. When it’s cold like this, we watch a lot of movies, and spend a lot of time motivating each other’s moustache-growing. I could tell you more, but I’d be in violation of the Bro Society Code of Conduct.
One thing every girl needs to understand about guys: We will never understand girls. Please, understand our misunderstandings as inevitable.
If I were to look at your iPod, what would be playing? Any one of Radiohead’s songs. Their music is so viscerally charged, each song is capable of extracting an emotional reaction from me. If you don’t think they are the greatest band in the world, we will have a problem.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Time manipulation is the ONLY right answer here. Think about it. Stuck on an exam? Pause time, open your bag and look at your notes. Want to make some money? Fast-forward through time, buy a sports almanac and pull a Marty McFly. Want to relive something from your past? Go back and live it again, or change it. Just be careful about creating time paradoxes. Those can be messy.
Where would we find you on a Thursday night? Ideally, I’d be having drinks with a small handful of friends, cooped up in one of our basements and listening to music. I do also get dragged to the Maddy on occasion. I can’t dance though. It’s charming.
How do you feel about being a campus cutie? Do you think I’ll have a chance with Scarlett Johansson now?
